A company has just installed fibre-optics in the business park and they have left the pavements and driveways in a disgusting state.
I was led to believe that it is the duty of the UIP to oversee/control the pavements etc, which is not happening. We have still to see a UIP worker in the vicinity of our building, and wonder where the money is being spent? The businesses are paying for their existence yet they all work down at the beachfront.
On a number of occasions we have found that taxis are using our fire hydrants early in the morning to wash their vehicles, which is highly illegal. Where is the UIP security?
CECIL GORE
Ballito
UIP Manager Thierry Leclezio replies:
The UIP is most concerned that Mr Gore has not been able to contact the UIP as all contact details are available on the UIP website www.ballitouip.co.za including the UIP management team, 24hr emergency response number and a fault reporting facility.
Mr Gore makes a very good point that the Ballito Business Park accounts for a large portion of UIP contributions with the balance being paid by commercial property owners on the north side of the P445 and beachfront – a number of residential complexes are also contributing. Collectively they support services to the UIP precinct which covers Ballito’s primary business and tourism nodes.
The UIP commenced operations mid-November 2015 with the initial focus being getting Ballito ready for the festive season. As tourism is a key economic driver the initial efforts from November to January focused on the beachfront and access roads being the M4, P445 and Ballito Drive. This included joint special projects with KDM where after maintenance schedules were put in place.
From February the UIP has focused on the Business Park which included audits of all municipal infrastructure repairs including street lights, stormwater drains, kerbing etc of which KDM have already repaired a number of faults with the rest scheduled for repair. The UIP has also drafted a special project plan of upgrades of high visibility areas in the Business Park which has commenced. On reoccurring services, the UIP cuts and edges the Business Park verges every second week filling in gaps between KDM cuts; the UIP has two staff dedicated to the Business Park picking up litter and completing maintenance tasks.
Whilst we fully agree with Mr Gore that the fiber optic cable issue has been a messy and an unsightly operation, it is an essential service for business. The UIP and KDM the ultimate authority, is working at resolving the current problem of reinstatement. With regards to the use of fire hydrants by taxis, this is the first time this issue has been brought to our attention – the precinct is a large area to cover and we encourage reports such as this so that the UIP can immediately respond.
I would encourage Mr Gore to contact me on 071 356 2279 and I will happily meet with him and address his concerns.
