LETTERS: ‘Holistic approach’ is a load of hogwash

I refer to your front page story “KwaDukuza council rejects boom gates” (at business park) (Courier, September 9.
I agree with the sentiments of those quoted as saying that the UIP need to be seen as being proactive and champion measures that will see the business park become a safe and attractive destination to conduct business, while at the same time seeming unappealing to would-be criminals. From what I understand the booms would not be a restrictive measure but one that facilitates easier monitoring of who enters the park after hours.
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist and read between the lines to see that “the caucus” see this as an elitist/separatist thing. Need I remind them that business owners in the business park include black African, Indians, coloureds and whites. The notion that “the caucus” had indicated that crime affects all areas and that a holistic approach needs to be used is the biggest load of hogwash that I have come across ever.
If this is the case then why not suggest to the King, as well as the President, that they should drop the fancy fences to the cattle kraals that they use to safeguard their cattle and rather look at a holistic approach to the problem of “stock theft”. I somehow doubt this would happen.
I am not a crime prevention specialist but I can tell you that what works for Ballito may not necessarily work for Groutville, and what works for Groutville may not necessarily work for Nkobongo. Holistic approach?
The way I see it is that “the caucus” is thwarting the UIP in their efforts to safeguard the “goose that lays the golden egg”.
