LETTERS: Youth must be taught about apartheid

Today’s youth are totally unaware of the harm that apartheid did to previous generations (myself included!). They tend to disbelieve us or laugh it off or feel that we are exaggerating.
We need to ensure that the coming generation are taught, as part of history, about apartheid and how it affected us as communities and as individuals. Apartheid existed from the time of colonialism but the Afrikaner government had the courage (or audacity!) to legalise it.
Let us forgive but never, ever forget. Whole communities were affected by some aspects of apartheid – separate schools for different races, separate hospitals, separate beaches, separate universities and so on. These practices kept the races apart for so long that trust went out the window and unfortunately this distrust of each other continues.
