It is essential to remember that “God answers prayer, not because we are good, but because he is Good.” AW Tozer
There are different ways in which to pray. This can be observed in the “Lord’s Prayer”, which is actually the disciple’s prayer, as suggested by Jesus.
Also, as one reads through the Psalms one can be struck by the different moods and circumstances that fit the life of the prayer.
Real prayer always comes from the real life circumstances of person doing the praying. God responds to honesty, not to posturing, or cosmetic prayers, but faith, based in reality, is the key, no matter what the circumstance.
‘Call to me and I will answer you …’ (Jeremiah 33:3a (NIV))
God always answers prayer. He either gives you what you ask for, or he may say “wait”, and he also has the prerogative to say “no”. “Though I don’t always get what I want, trusting God means that I am contented in the assurance that He got what He wanted.”
Different ways one may pray is as follows:
Sorry! The “I’m sorry” prayer involves confession and repentance. For example: “cleanse me from my sin.” (Psalm 51:2) or “forgive us our debts” (Matthew 6:12) as well as the scumbag tax collector’s prayer: “God be merciful to me a sinner”; Jesus’ response was: “This man went home justified.” (See Luke 18:13)
Help! This is called supplication. “Give us this day our daily bread”, or “Deliver us from evil” or “God please heal ….”
Thanks! “Thank for our daily bread!” or “Thank you for my family.”
Wow! Adoration and worship. Also called “the fear of the Lord”.
You may ask: “What? Are we supposed to be afraid of our Father?” Definitely “NO”, if He is your Father. But, fearing God in the Biblical sense means that you respect Him, and you have “wow” moments when He takes your breath away. I am reminded of many hikes in the Drakensburg, when coming around a corner and coming face to face with an awesome mountain peak. I gasped as though I had received a punch to the chest; the sight took my breath away. When you really begin to see the Almighty God, as He is, you are immediately stunned by His glory and filled with worshiping wonder. But for this to happen, you have to have your eyes, mind and heart open.
