LETTERS: How can we improve beach quality?

When KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) applied for pilot Blue Flag status on Dolphin Coast beaches many of us were excited and encouraged that at long last there was municipal recognition of the value of the Blue Flag status (“Red Flag For Kwadukuza Beaches”, Courier, Oct 28).
At last there was a will to uplift and improve our facilities, care for and nurture our environment, improve safety and security, and implement local bylaws. All of these would do so much to increase tourism and create jobs with numerous spin offs for all.
Exactly why was KDM unable to follow through after reportedly spending R40 000 applying for pilot Blue Flag status? Why spend that money with no plan of action to follow through? Why is everything so rundown, dirty and littered?
It requires few skills to keep things clean and attractive but there appears to be little supervision of workers as our public beachfront areas bear testimony.
Please can KDM respond and tell us what went wrong and what is the way forward to improving our beach facilities with or without Blue Flags.
I am sure that many of us involved in tourism would be glad to give any assistance we can in such endeavours.
