LETTERS: Drivers forced to take risks at Tiffany’s

Much has been written recently regarding the Tiffany’s intersection on the Salt Rock road. It is a highly dangerous intersection with considerable traffic concentrated in a small area.
So much is happening in such a busy intersection that drivers are forced to take risks and accidents will happen. Apparently, a traffic light is not a solution because of possible back-up onto the N2 intersection, which I agree would be unacceptable. I do believe, however, that some relatively simple measures could improve the situation considerably.
The existing acceleration and deceleration lanes at the intersection on the Salt Rock road are completely inadequate. If these were wider and longer, the concentration of traffic at the centre of the intersection would be reduced. There is ample room for the construction of these lanes on both sides of this road.
But better still there is absolutely no reason why a slip road could not be constructed to the west of the present intersection that would readily enable traffic travelling east to enter the Tiffany’s carpark. With this traffic no longer entering the dangerous intersection, the problem starts to ease.
The same idea could apply to traffic leaving the centre and heading towards Salt Rock. If a departure lane is constructed on the east side of the carpark with a long acceleration lane, departing cars would be able to merge with the mainstream traffic. This would reduce the traffic volume at the main intersection making it safer.
The Salt Rock road should also be widened in this area as it is very narrow at present – much too narrow. A better road surface and proper, clear road marking is my final comment.
