Letter: We are all racists

“I am not a racist, but….” Heard that before?
In South Africa we all come from different backgrounds, different schools, different languages, different communities, different Provinces, etc. The truth is, because of this we all have built in prejudices and different views of how we see things. In short, in one way or another we are all racist. What is important is we do not let these differences poison us, especially if – when treated correctly – they can be a strength.
It is interesting that most South Africans, in most places, actually get on quite well. In fact, as we all know, we have many examples of coming together in joy.
So why the problem and where does the toxic rhetoric come from? Well, mostly from our politicians, made worse by the media which magnifies every silly event. Yes, we have problems but, as in the past, we will solve them and in time today’s politics will be in the trash can. Happily, the real soul of the nation will live on.
So, whilst we think about the coming holidays and time spent with friends and family, don’t be fooled by all you hear or read. Instead look into the faces of your fellow South Africans whom you pass in the streets, smile and enjoy the friendly response you will always get. Then be happy to be a South African living in South Africa and know that your soul is also an important part of the nation’s.
