Letters: Ghost crabs, monkeys and sugar cane!

After 50 or so years in Ballito, I am sad to say that I am on my horse to Hermanus to live in a complex for old people with frail care etc.
I love Ballito, especially the old Ballito. Lots of fish and shells and ghost crabs on the beach. To walk into a shop with my swimming costume on, towel over the shoulder, to buy groceries. A house cost about R15 000. Everybody knew everybody. Phone calls with Mrs Thomé on the switchboard downtown. A drive-in where Checkers is today. Lots of yellowwood forest, trees growing on the beach at Louis Luyt’s complex, sugar cane growing all over Salt Rock, bamboos in Ballito and lots of monkeys.
Umhlali school had about 190 children. I spent my life teaching at the school. Today it is a wonderful school with Mrs Russell in the office! And then Ashton school. Another wonderful school, fetching Meaka and Ethan for nine years.
I will miss all these things, but life goes on in the Eastern Cape. So, have to say goodbye to all my friends.
