Letters: Can’t do what he likes

I balked when I read on the front page of last week’s Courier that ANC regional secretary Thabani Mdlalose felt that the president had done something “in line with the constitution of the country”.
Our constitution demands that the president acts in the best interests of this country, and the cabinet reshuffle was clearly not in South Africa’s best interests (as evidenced by the immediate fall in the Rand, protest marches across the country by people of all races and political persuasions, remarks made by ANC leaders themselves, our country’s demotion to junk status by S&P and Fitch and so on).
I was also appalled that Mdlalose stated that people “can do what they want but they should not dare touch the president”. I can’t find words to even comment on that. This world has seen its share of corrupt leaders who caused untold misery and destruction and should not have stayed in power. There must be recourse when a leader stops representing the people and starts acting in his or her own interests. Because the whole country suffers, rich and poor alike.
