Letters: Jaywalk to disaster

In the last week, I’ve nearly accidentally run into several pedestrians walking across Ballito Drive. The upgrade of the roads and pavements have really added a huge amount of value to the infrastructure of Ballito – assisting in the flow of traffic and people.
My concern is that many pedestrians are jay-walking from one side to the other. This is not only illegal, but also a great risk to motorists and themselves.
Apart from this obvious danger, the plant life along all the centre islands has been destroyed. May I suggest that a motion is put forward to the council to look at installing a green, 1.5-metre-high clear view fence along the middle island that clearly separates the traffic flow?
This will encourage pedestrians to cross over at the various robot crossings and not risk their lives dodging cars and trucks during rush hour, whilst walking with children and shopping parcels. It would also go a long way in allowing the plants to grow and flower and keep our road safer.
Please can something be done before it’s too late.
