This week saw an unprotected strike by part of the Economic Development Planning Business Unit by members of SAMWU in the Kwadukuza Municipality.
While the right to strike is a fundamental right enshrined in Section 27 of the Bill of Rights of our Constitution, the rights and safety of others should not be affected.
Striking members lit a fire at the entrance of the municipal offices in Salt Rock and walked through the building carrying smouldering burning grass making breathing within the building difficult.
Some members of our Community Safety Unit were at the scene but did nothing to prevent any of these actions.
Services to the public were affected.
The vehicle licencing office in Salt Rock has just come back online after months of complaints, but the clerk could not come to work the following day as she was unwell after all the smoke inhalation caused by the fire.
At a time when unemployment in our country is at a record high, we expect consumers to take time off to register vehicles without offering an alternate solution. Building Inspections could not take place and plans were not attended to.
It is unacceptable that there is no accountability and ultimately service delivery is affected.
