In some sections of South African society, I regularly hear of how South Africa is deteriorating – SAA, Health, Education . . .
Is the urban legend true?
My experience through 2017 in the field of education, working under the auspices of Partners of Possibility, gives me very great hope and encouragement. Nine local headmasters and headmistresses of schools in the North Coast area have been on a learning journey.
As a mentor in this group I want you to know that I have had the privilege of working alongside a remarkable group of passionate, dedicated, hands-on educators who deserve our greatest respect and support. I have learned that there is a real will to tackle the serious problems in the field of education. No one is satisfied with the present results.
No change in the status quo is likely unless WE change our attitudes and scrum in behind those who are responsible and trustworthy to make the changes vital if we are to lead a new generation into the future.
We can make a difference one school at a time. When a critical mass of us stand together any goal can be reached.
We are living a paradox. I need to read often: “Be strong, be courageous for you are the one . . .”
So, in conclusion I quote from J P Landman’s book The Long View: “To survive here you must be able to keep the contrasting pictures in your head at the same time. That’s not easy to do; it’s not clear. To live in South Africa you must learn to live with the ambiguity of the place. . .”
