I’ve followed this saga since it was first reported and it became obvious that SANRAL were lying about the materials supplied which led to the fact that both SANRAL and the contractor appeared to be possibly totally incompetent and the public were being fed fairy tales (Materials not substandard, say N2 suppliers, February 9).
What the hell is SANRAL up to now?
As a civil engineer with considerable experience in design and construction I would ask Ridhwaan Mohamed/ SANRAL how this contractor was ever given this contract. Was the sole criteria being that the contractor was of the preferred colour with obviously minimal experience?
It’s painfully obvious that no real financial checks were ever carried by SANRAL on this contractor as would be normally expected by an experienced and diligent employer.
Did the contractor know and understand the requirements of a CBR Test (Californian Bearing Ratio)? This testing would normally be carried out on layers of the subbase of the road as this is what actually carries the loads transferred through the wearing courses of bituminous macadam and the asphalt topping.
The CBR Test should factually be carried out by an independent laboratory to avoid any problems.
This would appear to be just another SANRAL fiasco. How much money has gone missing this time? It would also appear that SANRAL has possibly not been truthful yet again in trying to pass the buck to the suppliers
