I was extremely surprised to read Ed’s note at the end of the “Disgusting Image” letter in the last issue, maintaining that the article referred to was to “inform readers of all ages”!
We are talking about a graphic gay porn pic!
Do you realise that your papers were being handed out at the robots next to Umhlali school from 6.30am, so while parents were blissfully unaware and driving the usual school run, kids as young as five were scanning the paper for their school centenary pictures and coming across something their minds are not developed enough to cope with?
The picture was more sensationalist Hollywood than actually representing the real issues prostitution brings to the area (which I understand you need to report on).
Although it seems not many people got around to writing to complain, the “carpark chatter” at Umhlali school was definitely that it was totally inappropriate for a family newspaper and very badly timed when parents had no chance to censor what their kids saw, and I was really expecting an unreserved apology.
When you do print these kinds of sensitive articles at least tuck them away at the bottom of a page and leave out the porn pics.

PS Also, I don’t think the picture of the blow-up doll in a recent issue was really relevant either – I am sure it is more of the unusual items people get tricked into buying, rather than the norm!
