As members of the North Coast community, we are not too far to make a difference in the fast-approaching Day Zero in Cape Town.
It is with great sadness that we must witness our fellow province experience such a detrimental, immense and distressing crisis.
What is more agonizing is that the main cause is political, rather than Mother Nature herself. The national government refuses to allocate disaster relief funding, as they believe it’s wasteful expenditure. It’s a misfortune that the government, even for a millisecond, won’t put their political differences aside in order to help.
No-one can change the past’s mistakes, that is why they should work in synergy to create sustainable strategies and find ways on moving forward.
Through it all, it is heart-warming that the close-knit North Coast community have shown unity, doing their best to help and working closely with The Gift of the Givers. Everyone can make a difference, whether it’s by encouraging others to get involved, donating five litre bottles of water and even raising funds that will help with the transportation.
KwaZulu-Natal should also allocate water saving strategies and learn from Cape Town, good or bad, as we are also not immune from experiencing another drought.
No act is ever too small to help. We as fellow South Africans should make the crisis our problem, as Cape Town desperately needs our help.
