Letter: Where everyone knows your name

Don’t we just LOVE living in a small town?

Ok, it’s not good that you can’t skinner about anyone, as everyone is connected by birth or friendship somehow, but it has so many positive benefits.

I have been telephoned by the Lifestyle Post office to remind me to collect a parcel, before it is sent back to head office.

Allowed to take an expensive water purifier home without paying, and fit it to my system, as the shop assistant wasn’t sure of the price and the owner was not contactable.

Had our meal paid for as a surprise by our local café, just because it was Valentine’s. I am also greeted by name whilst out and about, by the lady who works at the Ballito vehicle licencing, although we only licence our cars once a year, Ballito post office staff, Spar cashiers, my son and daughter’s old teachers, the Toyota service guy (and I drive a BMW)!

I am assisted with sale of a property by an estate agent who is not the seller of the property, given guidance and kind advice.

Our local doctor arranged for our daughter to attend an interview which secured her successful career.

My son is a qualified lifeguard, courtesy of the dedication and many hours of free time given by the local Power family, who never fail to stop and chat and ask about our entire family’s wellbeing.

The local garage understanding that my husband works away often, therefore giving free help and advice when I have had car problems. The Ballito fishing tackle shop knowing my husband’s needs and helps me to buy gifts for him.

Car washers, car guards and street vendors recognise me and help me where they can, passing the time of day with me, not for tips, just being good human beings, the list is endless.

Yes, secrets are impossible, nothing is private and everyone knows your business, but it’s great to live somewhere where everyone knows your name.
