Restaurant Review: Mamma G’s at Umhlali Country Club

The food was extremely good. They were offering two pastas for the price of one, which is great value for money.

Some of you might not know that there is a Mamma G’s at Umhlali Country Club where they have some cracker specials, so after a parent evening I took the family for a bite to eat.

Access was super easy and quick, I did not make a reservation to test how easy access would be and it was straightforward.

I told the security at the gate that I was going to Mamma G’s and Bob’s your uncle, I was let in after the usual security check.

I did struggle to “find” the venue as they do not have up prominent branding and I thought we where in the club’s pub, but our waiter was quick to point out that we were in the right place.

The food was extremely good. They were offering two pastas for the price of one, which is great value for money.

We had the Carbonara and the Bellisima.

Both were well executed, not over-cooked, with ample sauce and good flavours.

The smile on waiter Krish Naidoo’s face gives you a good idea of how delicious the Bellisima pasta really is.

The only thing I would have changed was the bacon in the Carbonara, which could have been cut finer and made crispier which would have brought out more depth of flavour and created a nice texture. On the pizza front we had a Hawaiian (Lucci) and the Bellaccino, a vegetarian pizza.

The Lucci went down like a homesick mole. When a six-year-old child finishes two thirds of a large pizza you know he enjoyed it.

The Bellaccino consists of butternut, feta, garlic, baby marrow, beetroot, avo, grana Padano, sesame seed and pumpkin seeds.

It’s a super healthy option and I must say that surprisingly the beetroot really does work on a pizza. I did find it a rather loaded pizza though. It is a very relaxed venue and was enjoyable.

They were short staffed the night we were there with only two waiters for a rather full restaurant.

I could see them battling but they did try their best to ensure we had a good time. The price was right too, thanks to the special two pizzas and pastas with drinks came to R375.50. Now that’s a bargain.
