DA councillor Privi Naidoo writes: As part of the Democratic Alliance Ilembe Constituency’s youth month initiative, the DA Women’s Network undertook to hand over sanitary towels to the learners at Stanger South Secondary School on June 15.
The initiative forms part of the DA Women’s Network Sanitary Dignity Campaign, which aims to instill a sense of dignity to young ladies and allow them the opportunity to remain in school uninterrupted throughout the month.
The programme was well received by both the learners and educators.
We were highly disturbed however, to learn from the school principal that one of the biggest challenges the school faces is the close proximity to a haven of drugs and prostitution.
Until neighbourhoods like these are cleaned up by law enforcement, our youth will continue to fall prey to these unsavoury elements.
Children should not remain a victim of their circumstances, they deserve to be nurtured and motivated, so they eventually become valuable contributors to society.
We implore the relevant law enforcement departments to on take a more stringent approach in eradicating the scourge of drugs and prostitution.
