Jeanette Muller of Ballito writes: Surely there has to be a solution for the poor service at Home Affairs! The first attempt was at Tongaat.
I had taken a foreigner there at 7.30am regarding a passport matter and were 30th in the queue.
Without entering the building we were eventually told they were “off line” so left at 1.30pm with nothing.
Prior to this many people had left, deeming it a waste of time and effort.
There are no basic facilities offered i.e. no benches, drinking water or toilets for this long sixhour waiting period in full sun. The second attempt was at Stanger.
Queuing from 8am (at least 80 people ahead) and only reached the entrance door at 1 pm to be issued with a number (127!) to wait again until called and eventually left at 3pm.
What incentive is there to apply for Smart ID cards or passports? What of employees who have taken time off to deal with such matters?
The staff are quite rude – any questions asked, you are told, with pointed finger “You wait in queue”!
It was most embarrassing having a foreigner witness such an absurd and inefficient public “service”!
