Mike Norris of Umdloti beach writes: Bruni Ammann’s letter (Why build a university on the coastal belt? June 29) makes a lot of sense in regard to the proposed university adjacent to Bellamont Rd.
There is no denying the need for additional education facilities, that is not the point of the objection to the location.
Tongaat Hulett’s reply is nothing but a PR blurb and does not attempt to address the issues raised.
They mention leaving a legacy – well, they have done that in the ugliest terms and with little regard for the coastal location or sense of place. Just look at the concrete blocks of four and five stories that they have developed in zone 1 of Sibaya as a legacy for future generations.
A most important issue that is not being adequately addressed is access and traffic.
The M4 which is the life blood of all development along the north coast between Umhlanga and Ballito is already at or near capacity during peak morning and evening times.
The development of Sibaya zones 1 and 5 will add the traffic from at least 2000 residences plus office blocks and various commercial operations to the existing load. To consider adding the traffic of an 8000 to 10000 student university to this load is irresponsible to say the least.
To increase the capacity of the M4 will as a minimum require doubling the bridge over the Umhlanga River and the widening of sectors of the road which will have an impact on the environment.
The city and provincial authorities should consider a moratorium on development until the M4 situation has been dealt with.
They should also consider a levy on all developers in the area to help provide funds to finance the expansion of the roads.
