The Bible is a totally unique book.
It is actually a compilation of 66 books, written by 40 different authors, living in various places of the Ancient Mediterranean world.
They were drawn from vastly differing stations in life.
These were kings, peasants, poets, herdsmen, fishermen, farmers, doctors, priests, prophets, pastors, tent-makes and governors, yet the message is consistent.
It was written in the wilderness; in a dungeon, in palaces, in prisons and on lonely islands. Many of the writers wrote without the knowledge of what the other authors had written.
Amazingly, all spoke with uncanny agreement and reliability on scores of controversial subjects, especially when one considers that it was written over a period of 1 500 years.
Yet throughout, it has one main overriding theme from beginning to end: The Good News that God, our Creator, the King of the Universe loves broken mankind and has devised an ingenious plan to bring us salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ.
The Psalmist said: “I trust in your word.” See Psalm 119:42 and 130:5.
Jesus clearly had absolute confidence in the Old Testament record and used the scriptures as His authority on over 100 occasions.
This serves as a guide for us, when we wish to be sure of our claims regarding the spiritual world. Checking through some of these references, it is remarkable how Jesus endorses many historical and Biblical accounts.
He goes as far as to give credence to some of the most challenged narratives. For example: Creation, Adam and Eve in Genesis, Noah and the Flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the story of Jonah and the big fish.
He also makes these statements:
“I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.” Matthew 5:18 (NLT)
Jesus called the Bible “The Word of God”. “…you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. Mark 7:13a (NIV)
He said to His disciples, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Luke 24:44 (NIV)
As I think of all this evidence, I, together with most Christians, believe that God is its Author and as such, is the most miraculous book in the world.
