Restaurant Review: Nikos Ballito

The menu has some good options and the starter selection was outstanding.

I have always been a big fan of Mediterranean cuisine, so I was looking forward to trying some of the Greek restaurants Ballito now offers.

Nikos is located on the edge of the sea in the Big Blue building, which has seen a major face lift.

On entering you immediately feel the owners have put a lot into the venue, they have done a stunning job and the staff were most welcoming and friendly.

The menu has some good options and the starter selection was outstanding.

They are not the most ‘kiddie friendly’ place in Ballito, but saying that I would take my kids there again.

For starters we had the falafels and the dolmades. The dolamades are the nicest I have ever had! The vine leaves were tender and the seasoning in the rice was just right, while the accompanying sauce had a beautiful mint flavour. As for the falafels, I was impressed: they were super crispy and the tomato-based sauce was wonderful with a slight touch of cumin and heat.

The delicious, crispy falafals.

What I really enjoyed about our starters was the very different flavour combinations, until now not commonly found in Ballito. Looking back, I should have just ordered a few more of the starters and called it a day.

For mains we had the calamari, a Gyro (Greek sandwich) and my kids shared a spaghetti bolognaise. The calamari was a bit of a disappointment as it was over-seasoned and thus you lost the taste of the calamari among all the flavours. The accompanying zucchini fries did help as they where delicious.

As for my Gyro I really enjoyed it – the pork was tender, and the hummus really added a nice touch. My kids devoured the bolognaise, so that went down a treat.

And for dessert – baklava.

For dessert I sampled the baklava, which I will give them credit for. The deconstructive plating looked awesome, but it didn’t quite hit the spot like I was hoping it would.

I would definitely go back just for the starters. Their pricing is not bad and the venue on the beach is stunning.
