DJ Records: Greater than creation

When God created Victoria Falls and Mount Everest; all He had to do was stand at the balustrade of Heaven and speak the creative word, to create our beautiful world.

“The Great Commission” Jesus gave us is: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:17-19.

This followed Jesus’ “Great Invitation” to follow Him, and the “Great Commandment”, to “love the Lord your God ….” See Matthew 11:28-30 and 22:37.

After a mission in Zimbabwe, we stood at The Victoria Falls, during the flood season. The thundering cascade plummeted into the ravine below us and the sound was deafening. The ground shook as we were drenched with spray as I pointed at the falls and shouted into my friend’s ear: “God is doing something bigger than that inside you!”

Years later, while on a mission in Nepal and North India, on a flight from Kathmandu, as I gasped at the massive Mount Everest that towered above our aircraft, I said to another friend: “God is doing something bigger than that inside you my friend. But He is not only doing something bigger inside you, He is doing something bigger than that Mountain through your life here in India and Nepal!”

How could I say such things? I believe the Genesis account of creation: When God created Victoria Falls and Mount Everest; all He had to do was stand at the balustrade of Heaven and speak the creative word, to create our beautiful world.

But when it came to the greater work of Salvation, it cost Him the life of His beloved Son, Jesus. This was a far more costly and grander act of God than the creation of the universe. Thus He made it possible for us to fulfil the “Great Commission”, through Jesus’ being nailed to the Cross. This mission cost God the best He had.

Furthermore, to compare the magnitude of the Redemptive work of Salvation, with the act of the cosmic creation, we ought to remember that the world and all it contains will someday come to a fiery end, but we humans for whom Jesus died, are created to outlast the world.

This is the ultimate result of our mission:

“For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. … And they will reign forever and ever.” Revelation 22:3, 5.
