Over 3 000 years ago the Almighty said: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Jesus reiterated this in His ministry. (See Deuteronomy 6:5 and Mark 12:30).
Why do you think that we are given this command? Some may say that God seems to be love-starved, or emotionally needy, and our loving Him will fill up His need.
This can never be the case! God is totally self sufficient, and within the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit have always interacted in infinite satisfying love.
“For God is love,” and as such, He does not need our love. He knows that as humans, He has created and so constituted us that we are made to live in a love relationship with Him. He introduced us to His love by loving us in the first place.
He knows, as our Creator, that we as humans are most fulfilled when we live in this love relationship with Him.
Love is the most important and essential theme in God’s Word.
The Almighty God loves you, and desires to have you as His child; and He has paid the ultimate price to make this possible.
This knowledge has power to give you a sense of royal identity, security and authority.
I have seen how this knowledge has transformed individuals who have been raised in the most disadvantaged and abusive circumstances, into being confident, well rounded and grounded human beings.
Experiencing God’s love, and learning to walk through life in a growing love relationship with our Father in Heaven, positions us to overcome fear and a host of other toxic emotions such as worry, shame and resentment.
Living a life that is fully convinced of God’s love in Christ Jesus is a most powerful motivator. It has inspired thousands to accomplish amazing feats.
Knowing the love of Christ is a wonderful antidote to debilitating selfishness.
“For the love of Christ compels us …” Another translation states it like this:
“For it is the love of Christ that fuels our passion and motivates us, because we are absolutely convinced that He has given His life of all of us.
This means that all died with Him, so that those who live should no longer live self-absorbed lives but lives that are poured out for Him.”
(2 Corinthians 5:14).
