Letter: Destined for great things

"I watched Ricardo grow from a young boy into a fine young man and later into a seasoned politician with a passion to make KwaDukuza and its environments into a better place for its communities" - Andy Horton.

Ballito lawyer Andy Horton writes:

It is with great sadness that I learnt of the untimely death of the KZN ANC spokesman and ex-Mayor of KwaDukuza, Ricardo Mthembu.

Our practice, Laurie C Smith Incorporated had a close relationship with the Mthembu family, Ricardo’s father, Jacob, having worked for us for some 42 years.

I watched Ricardo grow from a young boy into a fine young man and later into a seasoned politician with a passion to make KwaDukuza and its environments into a better place for its communities.

During my tenure as a councillor with the KwaDukuza municipality, and whilst I served as an Exco member, I was asked by the ANC caucus to mentor Ricardo and I would hope that in some small way, I helped in defining his subsequent success as a two-term Mayor of the Kwa Dukuza municipal council.

I truly believe that but for his untimely death, Ricardo Mthembu would have gone onto much greater things.

To his wife and surviving children, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
