Letter: Rest in peace Kinks

"Many people would verbally abuse us for feeding the cats, but the worst was the dog owners who refused to have their dogs on leashes, and found it very amusing watching their dogs chase, and in many cases attack our cats" - Sharon Cossey.

Ballito resident Sharon Cossey writes:

It is with great sadness that we had to say goodbye to our beloved La Montagne promenade 18-year-old black cat, Kinks.

He was the sole survivor of the original 10 cats living on the promenade when I started feeding and trapping them to be sterilised 17 years ago.

Sadly he went blind overnight and we had to have him humanely euthanized.

I would like to express my thanks to all the volunteer Feline Feral Fund feeders who assisted with ensuring he had his evening meals together with some love and cuddles, especially with cat nip.

He was an icon down there these past 17 years and loved by many of our walkers/runners and timeshare residents of La Montagne.

I would, however, like to mention the hardships we encountered on a daily basis with some of the public on the promenade, especially in the past 10 years.

Many people would verbally abuse us for feeding the cats, but the worst was the dog owners who refused to have their dogs on leashes, and found it very amusing watching their dogs chase, and in many cases attack our cats.

Two weeks before Kinks was euthanised, he’d been bitten by a dog on his neck, causing a huge abscess.

Sadly of the original 10 cats down there, 8 were killed by unleashed dogs.

RIP Kinks – you will be sorely missed. To the end of an era.
