#Letter: N2 traffic hot spot needs urgent attention

"While the efforts of SANRAL to implement urgent mitigation measures to ensure smooth traffic flow is much appreciated, the lack of visible warning and safety measures is noticeable" - Privi Makhan.

Ward 22 councillor and KwaDukuza DA caucus whip Privi Makhan writes:
In the early hours of Monday morning emergency services arrived at an accident scene near the N2 Umhlali River detour to find a bus carrying 75 passengers and the driver that had crashed into the concrete median barriers.
Emergency services stabilised and transported 15 injured to hospital.
Two separate accidents occurred over the weekend at the exact same location.
While the efforts of SANRAL to implement urgent mitigation measures to ensure smooth traffic flow is much appreciated, the lack of visible warning and safety measures is noticeable.
The Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza has written to SANRAL, urgently requesting the implementation of the following measures:
* A speed-monitoring device to alert motorists of their speed before entering the zone, i.e., slow down LED signage.
* Ensure speed limits are consistent with site operations and traffic movements by way of engagements with RTI and other law enforcement entities, who will ensure motorist compliance.
* The use of highly reflective material on the concrete median barriers.
We will continue to monitor this high accident zone and ensure that our requests to SANRAL are urgently implemented to prevent further risk to lives and potential fatalities.
