#Letter: Time to bring back the death penalty

"This government has destroyed our beautiful country and I am sure our struggle stalwarts such as Mandela are turning in their graves because their struggle was in vain" - Nelson Puckree.

Stanger Heights resident Nelson Puckree writes:

The recent murder of Hillary Gardee, daughter of a high-profile politician, was senseless and gruesome.

Yet another example of where we are as a country because of weak law enforcement and judiciary.

In this country you can commit the worst crime and if you are connected to the most powerful, you can get away with any wrongdoing.

As long as we have a government that does not walk its talk and have old age pensioners leading this country’s crime-fighting strategies, murderers, fraudsters, drug dealers and rapists will have a field day because criminals have human rights and victims not.

I believe the only way to sort it all out is to bring back the death penalty. No more life sentences at the cost of the ratepayer.

The Constitution needs to be changed so the laws suit the people and not politicians.

We should call a referendum and see how many people want the death penalty. Although it may be regarded as barbaric by some, it is the only solution to address our high crime rate.

This government has destroyed our beautiful country and I am sure our struggle stalwarts such as Mandela are turning in their graves because their struggle was in vain.
