Police are frequently the first entity to whom gender-based violence incidents are reported and it is paramount that the officers establish whether the complainant is in danger and take necessary action to assist the victim.
The officer should provide the victim with a written notice explaining his or her rights and the services offered.
All victims should be treated with respect, dignity and be interviewed by a qualified police officer.
A complainant’s report should be taken in private, and where applicable taken for a medical examination to obtain medical evidence and complete a medical report.
The investigation should be led by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence unit or a detective with the relevant training.
Victims of sexual offences, femicide and infanticide and their families should be referred for victim support that are available.
In recent times, government has emphasised its intention of fighting gender-based violence and femicide, but this can only succeed if role players at ground level implement protocols stringently and not discourage victims.
