#Letter: Electricity outages need urgent attention

"In its year-end financial report, the municipality seems happy to write off millions to illegal connections, while the law-abiding ratepayers have to foot this exorbitant amount" - Jay Haricharan.

Jay Haricharan of Sheffield writes:

In our area we have been experiencing severe electricity outages, two weeks ago for three days in a row.

On June 6, it happened at 6.05pm and again at 8.10pm. All this is attributed to illegal electricity connections.

Although the KwaDukuza municipality is aware of the problem, no action to remedy the situation is being taken.

In its year-end financial report, the municipality seems happy to write off millions to illegal connections, while the law-abiding ratepayers have to foot this exorbitant amount.

Per our councillor, the municipality indicated illegal connections had been disconnected, but fail to inform us why the electricity is tripping?

It may be a good idea if we can take photos of the illegal connections and get answers.

Although the municipality may take a soft stance for votes, it really affects the community when they reach home. There are many elderly, children and people with disabilities who have to struggle in the darkness.

I have emailed senior managers in the electricity department and the municipal manager to get some answers, but have received no response. I believe if they are eager to act they would have contacted me.

KDM spokesperson, Sipho Mkhize responds: We sincerely apologise for Jay Haricharan’s experience.

Mkhize committed to contacting Jay personally.
