#Letter: Bring back the pointsmen!

"We have many people out of work, who I am sure could be trained for pointsmen duty" - Janet Stanway.

Janet Stanway of Umhlali writes:

Not so long ago, when there was a problem with traffic lights, point duty personnel were designated to direct and ease traffic flow.

We do not see this anymore. I understand that budget constraints will be given as the reason, but if you consider the cost to the general public in terms of fuel and wear and tear on vehicles, motivation should be made for the additional cost on whichever budget is appropriate.

It is, after all, a service department to the general public.

We have many people out of work, who I am sure could be trained for pointsmen duty.

Someone needs to think outside the box.

A well organised traffic flow will be for the benefit of all
