The Ballito Rocks initiative was started in July 2020 after I started painting rocks during lockdown as a hobby.
When searching online to get ideas about what to do with the rocks I had painted, I came across The Kindness Rocks Project.
The purpose is to spread kindness through art rocks.
The Kindness Rocks Project was started in 2015 by Megan Murphy who lives in Cape Cod, USA. Megan lost her mother and would take walks along the beach in Cape Cod.
One day she decided to leave a rock on the beach with words “You’ve got this” painted on it for a person to find, in the hope that it would resonate with them. This rock was found by one of her friends.
Since then The Kindness Rocks Project was born and grew on social media.

The initiative has grown tremendously.
Communities around the world have established their own Kindness Rocks groups and spread positivity, joy and kindness through art rocks.
To participate in Ballito Rocks, simply join the Ballito Rocks Facebook group; paint a rock with a positive word, message or picture; and place your rock in a public space for a stranger to find.
Whoever finds the rock has the option to re-hide it or keep it.
The Ballito Rocks Facebook group encourages people to post any rocks they may have found, so that the person who painted them can learn who found their rocks.
Painting, hiding and finding rocks is fun for all ages. Often people come across rocks that resonate with them and make them feel better about something they may be going through.
As Megan Murphy once painted on a rock “Kindness is making a comeback”.
