#Letter: Dangerous driving needs intervention

"The number of motorists who do not stop when traffic lights turn red is shocking, unacceptable and an accident waiting to happen - and there have been many" - David Maree.

David Maree of Avondale writes:

I would like to record my concern about the lack of traffic law enforcement in Ballito.

The number of motorists who do not stop when traffic lights turn red is shocking, unacceptable and an accident waiting to happen – and there have been many.

Another good example where traffic rules are ignored is at the three-way T junction at Stewart Drive and Douglas Crowe Drive.

Observation from the Toyota service parking area, especially during morning and afternoon peak traffic times, indicates that a very small number of motorists actually stop.

This is pretty much the norm at most intersections in Ballito. There are means and systems to deal with this issue.

One simple solution at traffic light intersections is to install cameras.

Apart from curbing reckless driving, this will also generate a welcome income for the municipality that can be put to good use, and pay for itself in a very short time.
