Ashraf Mather of KwaDukuza writes:
I support the sale of land (a portion of Townsend Park) in Ballito to the Zululand Islamic Society (ZIS) for the establishment of a non-racial place of worship.
I appreciate that the council is motivated by our constitution and the culture of ubuntu.
For many long years Ballito was a so called “white” area under the apartheid system and its residents denied us access to the town’s resources.
The objections to the sale are unreasonable, selfish, subjective and without merit, as there already exists places of worship for non-Muslim residents.
Exclusivity based on race, privilege and entitlement has no place in our country.
A place of worship for Muslims would contribute to social cohesion, non-racialism and engender peace and respect for all residents of Ballito and surrounding communities.
The objections should therefore be dismissed and the sale to the ZIS confirmed.
