#Letter: Park a safe haven for women

"It's the only park available to women where we feel safe" - Margaret Moore.

Ballito resident Margaret Moore writes:

Having read all the letters regarding the proposed sale of Townsend Park, I don’t think men – of all races – understand how vulnerable women are on their own against unsavoury elements.

This is the only park I can meet with my friends, with 50% being Indian, where we can walk our small pets, knowing there are other people (men and women and their kids) doing the same thing.

You have to drive to Townsend Park, so fortunately we don’t get people of poor integrity going there. It’s the only park available to women where we feel safe.

There are so many places to build a place of worship. Why take the last park available to women away?

What about next to Ford, where that area is expanding and there will be space for parking for all worshippers?

Gender-based violence applies to all women. Please keep this park, because it’s the only place we can meet and feel safe. The friendships that have developed because of this park is amazing.
