Seaward resident Christine Prodger writes:
I can somehow survive without money, food, employment as so many of us do, but now I am writing about television and radio, two of the wonderful pleasures in our lives for young and old, rich and poor.
These services offer endless means of enjoyment in the privacy of our own homes, creating a situation for relaxation so vital to cope with the way in which we live.
So what is happening?
I can be watching my television or listening to my radio when suddenly they shut down, and that is the end of that. It can be in the middle of a movie or a soccer match and there goes the ‘who done it’ or the ‘final score’ respectively, and with it my freedom to choose.
I think of a friend, an elderly person sitting alone in the cold darkness looking at a blank television screen for up to four hours, not once but maybe twice a day.
I think of another, a parent grappling with the responsibilities and well-being of a family during the invaluable evening hours, in the dark, when the television could help to entertain.
By now everyone has their own personal experience of Eskom loadshedding and the government and I doubt the controlling few ever sit in the dark without the companionship of a television or radio.
For goodness sake, lets all take a share in this wonderful country and for those responsible to stop abusing everyone’s right to a better life.
