#Letter: Municipal staff must shape up or ship out

"This KDM scam was only discovered through forensic investigations by Shepstone and Wylie. Where were the municipality's internal auditors?" - Jay Haricharan.

Jay Haricharan of Sheffield writes:

I write to you as a concerned ratepayer and resident in the greater KwaDukuza area in response to the Courier’s article “Public purse looted” (April 28).

Why do we have to pay exorbitant rates when it takes only a few people at the KwaDukuza municipality to easily siphon off millions of rands.

This trend was not heard of in the past but is now seemingly becoming the norm in the country.

This KDM scam was only discovered through forensic investigations by Shepstone and Wylie. Where were the municipality’s internal auditors?

Surely the procedure of entering data and verifying payments is not rocket science.

Officials caught in the money-making game needs to be replaced immediately and the losses incurred be recovered from them.

The municipality must shake up its staff. They must either shape up or ship out.

How many more steep increases are ratepayers going to experience to cover the losses?

I understand the draft budget for 2023/24 has already been approved. There should be a zero percent increase and officials should also not take salary increases for the next financial year.
