#Letter: Zinkwazi water problem remains

"As a retired water systems on-site investigation engineer, I wish to point out that most failures are caused by faulty air valves that cause water hammer that result in pipe bursts" - Hannes van Romburgh.

Hannes van Romburgh of Zinkwazi writes:

With reference to my letter in the November 11, 2022 edition of The North Coast Courier, regarding high water pressure and the water hammer causing water losses at Zinkwazi Beach.

In response, iLembe District Municipality operations manager Elias Bhengu said “a team of conservation and water demand management specialists were logging critical points in Zinkwazi”.

A logger was installed at my premises by a private contractor and at that time they measured 8 Bar water pressure. Now, six months later I still have had no response from the municipality.

Is that not wasteful expenditure if no action was taken? It appears the municipality is not able or interested to solve the water issues at Zinkwazi Beach. The situation has become worse, with more frequent water hammer and air in the system.

I have sent several emails to the municipality so that we can resolve the dispute, with no response.

I regard this as bad manners with no public relations skills on their side.

As a retired water systems on-site investigation engineer, I wish to point out that most failures are caused by faulty air valves that cause water hammer that result in pipe bursts.

High water pressure is the result of faulty pressure reducing valves, normally cause by valve settings or valve cavitation.

With regular electricity outages the situation will only get worse if the system is not bled properly when the pumps are restarted.

It is also very important to measure the velocity and pressure in the system to calculate a system solution.

Air in the system cause water meters to overread, thus you are paying for air as well.
