#Opinion: Can traffic circles solve congestion – residents weigh in

A hearty debate has emerged over the best way to make our roads more efficient.

Are traffic circles an answer to forever out of order traffic lights? Residents weigh in on the options.

Ballito resident Abel Acuña writes – I completely disagree with last week’s Opinion statement showing a preference for traffic circles over traffic lights.
Traffic circles do not work (in Ballito and Durban in general) because most people do not understand the rules or do not obey them. Most drivers from Gauteng will testify to that!
And you can’t deploy traffic cops to sort this out.

Emelia Lawrenz Stanton – Traffic circles are much better than dysfunctional traffic lights. At least with a circle, there is method in the madness. With no traffic lights its disastrous. Circles are also better than Ballito’s speed humps. They slow the traffic without leaving your chassis behind.

Aaron Green – Imagine the taxis at a circle? Worse then no robots they will never respect the circle system.

Rishi Bunsee – Unfortunately many don’t know how traffic circles operate.

Thami Duma – Traffic circles are a pain for pedestrians.

Delia Jordaan – In this case I don’t agree. A traffic circle will not have a different result. The problem is the volume of vehicles, which has grown exponentially over the last five years without the expansion of infrastructure. When will the building stop, our signal lane roads can’t take any more traffic!

Dhayalan Naicker – Traffic circles are the best for flow of traffic.
