#FromTheArchives: The Courier’s wildest stories

A great many April Fool's Day stories have graced our pages.

April brings many things in Ballito; milder temperatures, a packed Easter weekend and the launch of the Best of Ballito competition.

But for many years, the first Courier edition of the month also included an outlandish April Fool’s Day story. Crazy claims from even crazier names could be found in the paper for decades, ruffling more than a few feathers in the community in the process.

Our readership has heard about plans for Robert Mugabe’s new mansion at Clarke Bay, a “Teazers for Geezers” strip club for the elderly, nude beaches, dog permits and a ferry service across the Tongaat River (when the M4 bridge was closed), among many others.

Some memorable names include Ipul Yoleg, environmental activist Gween Peas, nudity campaigner A Niss, Dilly Macfrenzy, Viagra Vaughn and plenty more.

Do you remember being caught out by any of the stories?
