#Letters: School children left in the lurch
"In a school of over 1 000 pupils, it took a private citizen to provide a library and kitchen, highlighting the department's failure to meet basic needs" - Karenne Jo Bloomgarden.

Karenne Jo Bloomgarden writes:
I’d like to address this letter to the Department of Basic Education through your publication.
The department is lucky there are private citizens and businesses who care about the future of South Africa’s children. We step in when they don’t provide necessary repairs and resources.
I have been volunteering in government schools in KZN for the last 20 years. Last week I left a school that was closed for three days for the elections.
What a missed opportunity for the Department of Basic Education. These three days could have been utilised for much needed staff development, improving facilities or cleaning up the grounds.
I am devastated about the inability of the department to provide proper classrooms without holes in the floors and ceilings, broken windows and doors.
For a school of over 1 000 pupils it took a private citizen to provide a library and kitchen since the school did not have such facilities.
What are the administrators at the department doing? Have you seen some of these dilapidated schools?
Parents, caregivers and gogos, your children deserve better.
