Engines roar as Ballito Street Hero crowned

The first annual Ballito Street Heroes event took place on September 14 and 15 to the roar of engines and burning tyres.

Last weekend saw rubber burn as some impressive and very shiny super cars took to the streets at the Laguna Seca for the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce and Edusport’s first annual Ballito Street Heroes event.
The crowd was wowed with the purring, rumbling and sometimes screaming of engines as drivers shot their cars down the track, around a ‘bowl’ and back.
Amateur and professional drivers had their run of the track on Saturday and Sunday, interspersed with demonstrations by the Formula Renault, KZN Drifters, F1 Benneton, as well as 4X4 and FMX (Freestyle Motocross) demonstrations throughout the day.
The prize of Ultimate Street Hero went to Des Gutzeit in a Nissan Skyline GTR32. Competing in the muscle car division, he set the fastest overall lap time of 50.087 seconds.
The quickest super car around the track was driven by Michael Gibson, clocking a lap time of 54.860 seconds in the Porsche 997 CarreraS. Willie De Beer topped the charts of the novice and Porsche club race with a lap time of 53.774 in his Porsche GT2 and Afsal Moosa won the bowl final in his Porsche with a time of 56.549 seconds.
With over 5, 000 people in attendance, the event was a great success, sating the appetites of both car enthusiasts and hardcore petrol heads.
“We’re very happy,” said Trenly Tilbrooke, Ilembe Chamber of Commerce’s CEO, “this was the first time it’s been done and we’re confident it will be even better next year.”
“The responses we have had on Facebook and from people taking part have been overwhelmingly positive and they have indicated they would like a come back next year,” said Edusport consultant Ed Hill.
