Salt Rock Surfer Shane Sykes came in 10th place at the King of the Groms competition in France.

Salt Rock surfer Shane Sykes took on the best young surfers in the world at the King of the Groms competition in France last week.
Shane came 10th overall in the competition in Hossegore, which is considered to be one of the best surfing spots in the world.
The competition is unique as to enter, surfers had to put together a video showcasing their moves. After being voted for online, the best videos were screened by a panel. Shane was the South African winner.
The 18 competitors had three non-loser rounds in which their best three waves were recorded to establish an overall log. The top three from the rounds competed in an overall final. American Jake Marshall (14) won the final.
Shane was accompanied by his mother, Michelle, who supported him all the way.
“I loved being there to support and to film his every move. It is also a great opportunity for me and especially Shane to meet his competitors and their families,” said Michelle.
“A lot of friendships have been made on this trip, especially  since they all stayed in the Quiksilver Boardriders House in Hossegor together. It is not just about surfing – ping pong, skating, eating out together has helped to bond them together,” she said.
The Sykes’ enjoyed France and had a blast in the small surfing town.
“Hossegor is like a surf resort with a ski village feel, good restaurants, beautiful people and good shopping,” she said.
Shane was happy with his performance, especially after recovering from a knee injury earlier in the year.
“My knee is feeling good after my injury and ready for the year ahead,” he said.
Next up for Shane is the KZN Champs coming up in the next couple of months.
