Brett conquers Roof challenge

Torrential rain on the second day made for technical conditions, testing the riders to their limits.

Salt Rock resident, Brett Swanepoel (18) finished in 11th place in the 2013 Roof of Africa extreme enduro challenge. The event makes up one of the five legs of the World Extreme Enduro Series and annually attract the top riders from across the world.
Brett, riding for team JOAT/ccGallery KTM Gateway, finished day one in 19th position after sliding down a bank and losing valuable time. Torrential rain on the second day made for technical conditions, testing the riders to their limits. Brett and Lars Enöckl, the 2013 Austrian enduro champion, set out a minute apart and spent the day riding together.
Known for being the most challenging of the stages, Brett started the third and final day in 17th position. Expertly navigating the wet, muddy and misty conditions, the Crawford College student caught numerous riders on the passes to eventually finish 11th in a time of nine hours 16 minutes.
The race was won by Graham Jarvis (UK), ranked number one in the world, followed by Chris Birch (NZ). Scott Bouverie was third and the first South African rider.
Of the 110 gold entries, only 23 managed to complete the race, 23 of the 182 silver entrants finished and only 16 out of the 74 bronze riders reached the end.
Jarvis and Birch both commented that it was the hardest Roof of Africa they have ever ridden in.
