Local cyclists gathered on Monday evening at Holla Trails to ride together in tribute to the late cyclist, Burry Stander.
Friday, January 3, marked the anniversary of Stander’s death at the age of 25 in Port Shepstone in an accident with a minibus.
The mood at Holla trails was thoughtful, yet charged with purpose as cyclists stood quietly for a moment of silence for Stander, who many are certain would have lived to become one of the world’s greatest mountain bike cyclists.
Stander had finished fifth in the 2012 London Olympics mountain bike race. He was also one of the founding members of the well known specialist cycle store, Concept Cyclery.
Stander’s widow, Cherise told the cyclists how much it meant to her to commemorate her late husband like this.
“Any cyclist you ask will know who Burry Stander is,” said Holla Trails trail master Cam Service, “he was an absolute legend.”
