Friendship spread all over Tongaat

Friendship Games coming to Tongaat

The inter-district Friendship Games are coming to Tongaat this August and for the first time the hosting district, Tonver, will not have to raise money for the event.

The provincial sport and recreation department injected R200 000 into school sport at grass root level and a portion of this money will be used for the Friendship Games.

The Games were started five years ago and selected teams from the five districts, Cadssa, Phoessa, Cumberwood and Umlazi compete for the champions’ trophies in different sport codes.

“Teams will compete in soccer, netball, volleyball, chess and table tennis from U11 to U17 divisions,” said Tonver president Guru Ramcharan.

Ramcharan said previously districts had to raise their own funds to pay for playing kits, medals and other operating costs.

“Playing kits were a huge challenge but thanks to the sport and recreation department, this year all teams have been provided with kits,” said Ramcharan.

Tournament director of Cadssa Yoges Moodley said they were trying to get the department to also sponsor pupils’ meals and transport.

“If the department can foot the rest of the bill that will take a huge burden off the almost 1 500 pupils who look forward to this annual event,” said Moodley.

Each district will receive four soccer kits, four netball kits, eight volleyball kits, golf shirts for table tennis and chess participants in time for the games.
