Eleven-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) was defeated by event winner Bourez in the semifinals. Slater dominated from the outset, blending a variety of impressive turns on a number of waves while Bourez struggled to find a rhythm.
In the dying minutes however, the momentum changed and the Tahitian lit up a righthander with Herculean power for a 9.37, the day’s highest singlewave score, and the win.

Hawaii is the new VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship Gold Medal Team and winner of the Team Champion Trophy. The SA Junior Team placed eighth overall in Ecuador unfortunately not improving on their sixth place finish in 2013.
Not much should be read into that though, because there were individual performances that trumped a lot of what the 2013 team could muster.
Local surfers Shane Sykes finished in 25th place while Teal Hogg took a 16th place overall.
