Two North Coast moms are using their love for hockey to bring the community together.
Claire Black and Lauren Tweedie are the brains (and beauty) behind the newly launched North Coast Hockey Academy.
They are hoping the academy will attract not only children but their entire families to the field.
“There is a wealth of hockey talent on the North Coast but there is no club here for them to be part of. Most of the players have to travel to Durban North to train,” said Tweedie.
Both hockey coaches, Tweedie and Black want to pool the North Coast’s hockey resources including coaches, venues and players.
“We do not have an astro turf here either so a long term goal is to build one everybody can share. We want to use hockey to bring people together, young and old. We also aim to establish a mixed social league for ladies,” said Black.
The Robert Group and McCarthy Toyota Ballito have already come on board with sponsorship for the Academy, which will run in two separate terms of pre-season hockey coaching.
“Most school coaches are either not properly versed in traditional hockey rules and conduct, or there is simply not enough time to teach players at school. We want to be the middle ground,” said Tweedie.
The academy is targeting players between the ages of six and 13 years old. Training will begin on May 9 at 4pm.
To register email nchacademy@gmail.com or contact Tweedie on 060 425 1070 or Black on 082 828 7635.
