Ballito has its very own Clarke Kent in the form of surfer Jaco Kapp, who is an accountant from 8am to 5pm and a provincial surfer in his spare time.
Kapp (37) is an associate at Leask and Partners in Ballito and spends his days crunching numbers in the office. In the fashion of the famous Kent, he gets to tear off his corporate uniform to reveal his wetsuit after a day at the office.
The surfing accountant originally hails from Knysna and his love-affair with surfing started when he moved to Jeffery’s Bay.
“I started surfing when I was about 16-years-old. We used to surf Buffalo Bay, which was the local spot. In my first year of surfing I made the Southern Cape team,” said Kapp.
From there he made the SA Schools team in his matric year. After school he put his studies first, studying a Bcom accounting at Port Elizabeth University and completed his Honours.
He continued to surf for Eastern Province throughout his studies and was also selected for the South African Students team.
When the time came, Kapp decided to swim for warmer waters, literally.
“I moved to Durban to focus on my surfing, then about six years ago I moved to Ballito to focus on my career, which was quite ironic.”
He has surfed for KZN since he moved to Durban and has also been the team captain numerous times.
“The responsibility seems to fall on me because I am the accountant, all the other guys do not want to deal with it,” he joked.
His dedication saw him selected for the KZN team going to the SA Senior Surfing Champs, held at Nahoon Reef in East London from May 15 to 18. Kapp also heads up the North Coast Boardriders club, which regularly organizes local surfing competitions. He said its going to be a fun year because they have secured a Billabong sponsorship for R32 000 in prizes for the year.
“The club is a great way to give junior surfers advice and training and it provides a platform to go further in the sport.”
