Dolphins make it three in a row!
The Ballito Dolphins first team are proud of their third win on the trot, reinforcing their third position on the league log.
From where they started at the beginning of the season, the Ballito Dolphins have made a 180 degree turnaround and are on a roll.
The first team brought home a clean sheet and a bonus point on Saturday, April 23 when they crushed the Durban Mets 22-0 at home, planting four tries behind the chalk in the process.
This, their third win on the trot, reinforced their third position on the league log.
Starting into a strong headwind, Dolphins loose forward combination, Sky van Niekerk (captain) and Zamani Mthembu scored two unconverted tries in the first half, followed by a third by Chris Anker to send the teams into the change rooms at half time with the Dolphins firmly in command with a 15-0 lead.
A scrappy second half saw the Dolphins get sucked into the Mets’ unstructured style of play and they only managed to score one more try to secure a bonus point.
Interestingly, the Dolphins seconds won with exactly the same score as last week against the Maritzburg Collegiates, sneaking in a 26-25 win over the Mets.
The visitors scored first to open up a seven nil lead which was soon neutralised when Mpho Motaung dotted down for the Dolphins to equalize at 7-7.
The experience of Shaun Swart and Dane Williams contributed to the Dolphins’ success and Williams scored the side’s second try.
At half-time, the Dolphins’ two converted tries versus the Mets’ one converted try and two penalties saw the Dolphins heading into the change rooms with a narrow 14-13 lead.
With the wind at their backs in the second half, the Dolphins started to show signs of domination.
“Our young front row showed much skill, dominating the much larger and heavier opposing front row, creating an attacking platform for the backs,” said Dolphins junior chairman, Mark Svenningsen.
Dane Williams and Cameron Bartholomew contributed a try each in the second half.
Handré Steenkamp and Jaco Nel were both men of the match for the seconds and for the firsts it was Sky van Niekerk (back) and Hennie Swart (forward) in only his third start.
This weekend the Dolphins are resting and will be in action again on Saturday, May 7 in Westville.
The next home game is on May 14 against the boys from Hillcrest.
